Based on further information and pictures that have been brought to our attention, we have strong reasons to believe that this Montreal Canadiens Patrick Roy white jersey was actually game worn throughout the 1988-89 season, as well as the 1989 pre-season. And not in the 1994 pre-season as originally stated by Game Worn Auctions.
Assuming these two photos are from the same preseason, Roy is wearing a brand new Brian’s glove and using a Louisville stick. Roy switched to a Brian’s glove to start the 89-90 season. He wore a Heaton glove through the 1988-89 season, as shown in photos below. Also, he only used Louisville sticks until close to the end of the 91 season, and by 94 was wearing and using all Koho gear, sticks included. Additionally, Roy looks quite young still in these photos.
In the photos below, from the 88-89 season, notice the mark in the white portion of the white stripe on his mask that match the mark in the photomatched preseason photo. Also, notice the old mask straps he is using and the Heaton glove.
Finally, to date the photomatch to the 1989 preseason, here are video still shots from 11/16/89 and 1/29/90 from games vs the Bruins. Again, notice the old straps and mark on the mask from the 11/16/89 game that match the preseason photo. On the 1/29/90 video, Roy’s straps are white and new, and look like he is wearing a new mask by that point.
So, with all these pictures, we believe the jersey was used during the 1988-89 season and then reused in the 1989 preseason, not the 1994 preseason.
Original LOA from Game Worn Auctions:
This home white knit gamer by CCM was worn by Patrick Roy during the 1988-89 or 1989-90 NHL season. The game wear on this vintage sweater is solid and consists of stick and puck marks, plenty of goal post paint transfer, crossbar paint transfer, heavy inner pilling and a team-sewn repair. Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Roy wearing this exact jersey during training camp in 1994. The Canadiens recycled Patrick’s late 1980’s regular season gamer for use during training camp in 1994, sans a nameplate as seen in the photo match. Roy was in his prime in the late 1980’s while wearing this sweater on home ice at the Forum in Montreal. For his efforts, Patrick captured back-to-back Vezina Trophies in 1988-89 and 1989-90 and was selected 1st Team NHL All Star in both seasons.
