MASK OF THE WEEK: ROBOCOP🤖

"RoboCop" stars Peter Weller as Alex Murphy, a police officer in a dystopian Detroit who suffers torture and death at the hands of a gang, only to be resurrected as a cyborg, "part man, part machine, all cop."

Omni Consumer Products (OCP), a mega-corporation that has taken over the police in the appropriately nicknamed Motor City, programs RoboCop with the directives of serving the public trust, protecting the innocent, and upholding the law. He also has a fourth classified directive, whereby "any attempt to arrest a senior officer of OCP results in shutdown."Released in 1987, "RoboCop" functions on numerous levels, including as a campy critique of Reaganomics, the "Greed is good" culture (further immortalized in Oliver Stone's "Wall Street," which hit theaters the same year.)

TRIVIA: The 1987 film “RoboCop” was set, but not filmed — in a futuristic and crime-ridden Detroit. Where was the movie filmed?

B: Dallas, TX
C: New York City, NY

Answer Below!

It took 6–8 months searching for an actor to portray Alex Murphy RoboCop. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Ironside, and Tom Berenger, were also considered for the role. The director favored Schwarzengger, the star of the recent success, The Terminator, but he and other actors were considered too physically imposing to be believable in the RoboCop costume.

Peter Weller was the only person who wanted to be in the film. The low salary he required was in his favor, as was his good body control from martial arts training and marathon running, and his fan base in the science fiction genre, following his performance in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension.
